The Association for Veterinary Family Practice (AVFP) consists of a variety of stakeholders in the companion animal health professions, including veterinarians (from both academic and private practice), members of veterinary hospital teams, trainers and behaviorists, practice managers, human mental health professionals, representatives of pharmaceutical and nutritional companies, and from other areas in the veterinary industry.
These members all share a common vision for the future of primary care companion animal health. This vision is based on:
- Recognition of the dramatic and continuing changes in the relationships between humans and companion animals.
- The ongoing revolution in medical technology and knowledge.
- The understanding that special skills and knowledge are required in order to meet the physical, emotional and mental needs of pet members of a human family.
- The need for focused research into the changing roles and needs of pets int he family and the community.
- The need to provide an educational venue to identify and teach the special skills and knowledge required to be a part of the Veterinary Family Practice team.
The Vision encompasses the expanding role of an integrated veterinary health care team identifying and meeting the needs of patients within the context of their places in families and in communities.
